If a person has duplicate voter IDs—even if they are in different states

Having more than one voter ID in India is a serious matter. Under the **Representation of the People Act, 1950**, it is an offense to be registered in the electoral rolls of more than one constituency.

If you or someone you know has duplicate voter IDs—even if they are in different states—you must immediately take steps to cancel one of them.

### 1. Which ID should be kept?

You are legally required to be registered only in the place where you are **"ordinarily resident."**

Keep The voter ID for the address where you currently live.

Cancel The voter ID for the old address or the state you no longer reside in.

### 2. How to cancel the extra Voter ID

The process can be done entirely online through the **Voter Service Portal (VSP)** or via the **Voter Helpline App**.

#### Online Method:

 1. **Visit the Portal:** Go to the official voters.eci.gov.in website.

 2. **Form 7:** This is the specific form used for **"Objection for Proposed Inclusion/Deletion of Name in Existing Electoral Roll."**

 3. **Fill Details:** Log in, select **Form 7**, and choose the option **"Request to delete my name from electoral roll."**

 4. **Reason for Deletion:** Select the reason as **"Already enrolled"** or **"Permanently shifted"** (depending on the situation).

 5. **Submit:** Provide the EPIC number of the ID you want to cancel and submit the form. You will receive a reference ID to track the status.

#### Offline Method:

 * Visit the **Electoral Registration Office (ERO)** or meet your **Booth Level Officer (BLO)** in the constituency where you want to delete the name.

 * Hand over a physical copy of **Form 7** and a copy of the voter ID you wish to cancel.

### Important Legal Note

> Section 31 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, states that making a false declaration (such as claiming you aren't registered elsewhere when you actually are) is punishable with **imprisonment for up to one year, a fine, or both.**

Since the Election Commission regularly conducts "Special Intensive Revisions" to identify and purge duplicate entries using software and field verification, it is much safer to voluntarily delete the extra entry now rather than waiting for an official inquiry.
